Divine sounds

The first day of Navaratra is devoted to enlivening the sense quality of Sound. The chanting defies adequate description. It’s one of those things that ‘you’ve gotta be there!’

But since you’re not, I’ve been making some recordings. Here is the first one, the Purification Mantra that begins the Devi Puja.

Purification Mantra at the beginning of Devi Puja

Here is the mantra, as well as a translation, both from Jeffrey Armstrong. The mantra is written in paired lines.

The first line is the actual mantra. The second line is the mantra split up into phonetic syllables. Pronounce each syllable.

The Purification Mantra

AUM apavitro pavitro va
om a pa vi tro pa vi tro va

Sarva vasthang gatopi va
sar va vas thang ga to pi va

Ya ismared pundari kaksho
Ya is ma red pun da ri kak sho

Sa vahiya abhyantar suchihi
Sa va hi ya abh yan tar su chi hi

AUM Shri Vishnu Shri Vishnu Shri Vishnu
Om shri vish nu shri vish nu shri vish nu

AUM Shanti Shanti Shantihi
om shan ti shan ti shan ti hi

Translation to English:
Everything that is not pure becomes pure
and all things that are impure, wherever they are,
go away.  May Lakshmi and Vishnu the maintainers
of all bless us and bring us peace.

If you would like to listen to the complete pujas, just let me know an I’ll post the Devi Puja and Shiva Pujas to the website. Devi Puja is about 20 minutes long and Shiva Puja is about 40 minutes long.

Nine Days of enlivenment

Allegory is everywhere when you look for it.

Here is Durga made from three other Divine Ladies. She is riding a Lion.

Durga, Mother Divine

Durga, Mother Divine

What is a lion? Boldness. Roaring. Charging with immense power and full commitment.

A quote attributed to Goethe says:

“What you can do, or dream you can do, begin it;
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”

It is springtime, the beginning of the new growing season. You have Nine Auspicious Days to plant the seeds you wish to tend for the next 6 months. Be bold in your planting!

Coconut on top of Kalasha

Oldest form of Durga worship - Kalasha (clay pot) with nine plants and coconut

Note that the Kalasha and Durga/Lion statue are on a dirt foundation. More on that in a few days. Hint-it illustrates the miracle of creation and growth. The Kalasha is a symbol for Mother Earth, who gives us life and breath. The coconut at it’s least is a symbol for sustenance.

Each of the Nine Days is devoted to enlivening a particular quality. First day was hearing. Sounds were amazingly clear to me. During the pujas, sound seemed to swirl around me, caressing the deepest recesses of my being. Second day was touch. It was a kinesthetic day for me. I noticed a lot of energy movement within my body. Third day is sight. Colors were on the menu today. Seeing the vibrant reds, oranges, yellows of the flowers lifted my spirits. We also took a video of our dancing after the pujas. I’ll try to edit it down to a small size and post it.

Tomorrow is the fourth day of Navaratra when the sense of taste is most enlivened.

Ganesha is the Remover of Obstacles to our enlightenment.

Fifth Day is devoted to the enlivened sense of Smell.

Vasantik Navaratra 2010

Mother Divine is Durga, a combination of the three female aspects of creation, maintenance, and destruction. Durga is the union of Saraswati, Luxmi, and Parvati. Knowledge, Finance, and Physical presence all rolled into one. Impressive.

Think about how anything gets done in this world. Imagine different departments of our governments. The world of the Divines is like that. There is a Cosmic Department of Finance, of Creation, and of Destruction. Each of these Forces of Nature are embodied in each  of us. Some of us manifest them more strongly than others. Some of us barely manifest them at all. The point is that there are areas of function that gather around these three purposes.

Durga is worshipped at this time of year to bring her energy to all our endeavors. Wealth and Prosperity is a constant theme here because money really does make the world go around. Want to do some public works, improve a city’s infrastructure, build a bridge? You’ve got to get the money first. Does your country need better defense? How about some jets from Israel, or infantry arms from China? You’ve got to appropriate the funds, first. From Durga, all things can flow.

This is how She looked this morning after our first day puja.

The puja is used to begin the yagya. It attracts Her attention to the individual yajmans (yagya clients). During the puja, the names of each of the yajmans and the pandits are announced. Then the pandits go to their places and begin to chant for the yajmans.

I got set up for the first of the Nine Days by going shopping with my friend, Manju. We went shopping! She is Pandit Dixit’s daughter, an expert adminstrator and Sanskrit scholar. I do not know Sanskrit. I am going on the word of her nephew who was bragging about the perfection of her pronunciation at lunch yesterday. I do know her administrative abilities as Annette and I have worked with her via the internet for the last 10 years.

Here she is with that Mona Lisa smile:

The second day of the Nine promises to be very busy.

I’ll enjoy the morning puja, the go visit Lucknow for a few hours. My great great great grandfather was stationed there in 1857 with the British Royal Engineers. I wonder how his DNA will color my seeing tomorrow.

I’ll find time to blog about the meaning of each day of the Nine Days of Mother Divine.
